November 2019 – November 2024

As a Communications Officer at Service Canada – Ontario Region I played a pivotal role in ensuring effective communication between the organization, its employees, stakeholders, and the public. The position involved developing, implementing, and managing communication strategies and materials to support Service Canada’s programs and initiatives. I specialized in graphic communications and multimedia projects. However, because of my wide-ranging skillset I collaborated on many portfolios and projects with other staff in the Communications directorate.

My Key Responsibilities:

  1. Content Development:
    • Create clear and engaging communication materials such as newsletters, reports, press releases, social media posts, graphics, branding material and web content.
    • Ensure all content aligns with Government of Canada and Service Canada’s mission and brand guidelines (Federal Identity Program).
  2. Internal Communications:
    • Develop strategies to improve employee engagement and communication within the Ontario Region.
    • Organize and disseminate updates, announcements, and policy changes to staff through intranet platforms, emails, or internal bulletins.
  3. Media Relations:
    • Act as a liaison with media outlets to coordinate press releases, respond to media inquiries, and manage public relations efforts.
    • Attend various events accross the region to represent the department and stakeholders for funding and programming announcements.
    • Represent the organization by creating content, taking photos and conducting media question sessions with ministers and speakers.
  4. Digital and Social Media:
    • Maintain and update the Ontario Region’s online presence, including websites and social media platforms.
    • Analyze metrics and adapt strategies to improve audience engagement.
  5. Meeting Moderation and A/V support
    • Set up, test, and operate audio-visual equipment, including microphones, projectors, sound systems, and video conferencing tools, to ensure smooth event execution.
    • Facilitate the flow of meetings or events by managing the agenda, introducing speakers, monitoring questions, and ensuring discussions stay on track and within the allotted time.

Highlights:

During my tenure in this role I provided a refreshing update to the graphic identity of Service Canada Ontario Region. I worked with the leadership of the department to design a new logo, establish a print and digital color palette, produce rigid guidelines for type, spacing and handling of files and templates for communications products within our company.

In February-April of 2020 I was lead on designing all COVID-19 response material to ensure our department had clear communications within our workspaces and public offices for guidance on safety and emergency management. I created products that were used nationally in over 1600 offices for the Government of Canada. Our work was featured on the news as it was the primary source of communication for the Government to announce their new operations measures during the initial switch to digital services in Canada during COVID-19.
