At the beginning of 2020 the Government of Canada started to take emergency preparation efforts for COVID-19 and the potential outbreak of the virus in Canada. At Service Canada, we have public offices for Canadians to come in and for various services, benefits and application assistance. Unfortunately our business lines had to respond to the virus without knowing much about how contagious or deadly the virus would potentially be.
As the largest region in Service Canada, the Ontario Region communications team handles emergency response alongside organizational leadership (ADM office). This issue was pressing and little did we know how big the COVID-19 global response would become. Our directors gathered and decided we needed communications products and a strategy to ensure our very essential lines of business could still operate through the pandemic whilst upholding the safety of our employees and the public.
We drafted written and visual content ideas for our posters and referenced other emergency material from the past as well as those in other parts of government within Canada and globally such as World Health Organization and the Pandemic Action Network. This high priority task required overtime and late hours. The initial design required us to work until 11pm on one night and 9pm on another night to ensure deliverables were complete.
I designed a poster layout with bright colored header and footers in red and yellow (not our standard color scheme for communications materials). We wanted these posters to stand out, we used them at the entrance of the offices to ensure high visibility and urgency. Further, we designed 6 foot pull up screens with a similar color and layout scheme with instructions for alternative service options for offices which needed to be closed. The pull up screens were placed in such a way that they could be viewed even when the office was closed.
I was responsible for designing, revising, finalizing and securing a printing vendor and delivery for all products to ensure each of our 160+ locations received a pull up screen in English and French.
Upon the reopening of offices we designed and produced other products for safety within our offices such as the social distancing markers for our floors and digital versions of our posters for the display units in our office.
We used a QR code campaign to redirect clients to our online services and newly designed options for service such as ‘call back requests’ to ensure access to clients who may not have a computer/smart device or internet connection.
